Accessibility

The GBDoc Accessibility Pledge

Our team of community volunteers are always seeking more ways to make the GBDoc a kinder and more inclusive place for everybody. Following conversations with people who live with visual impairments, it became apparent that some were being excluded from tweets which contain image and video content. Diabetes is sometimes associated with sight loss and, while this is also a global issue, we felt the exclusion of anybody living with diabetes from any aspects of our content should be addressed urgently.

Our pledge:

  • To update our website at GBDoc.uk to include image descriptions on our content before September 1st 2022 via the use of ALT text or by writing captions alongside each image.
  • To use ALT text on all our static images, GIF images and video content on all our Twitter accounts before September 1st 2022.
  • To include subtitles on our new video content from September 1st 2022 for people living with hearing loss.
  • To consider accessible places for meet ups in person, including but not limited to people living with visual impairments.
  • To address concerns and errors, such as missing ALT text, as soon as we are able by replacing, editing or adding to the content of concern.

We would like to kindly encourage all users of Twitter and other social media platforms to consider using image descriptions and ALT text on all relevant content. For help on how to do this, please follow this link: https://help.twitter.com/en/using-twitter/picture-descriptions

Searching for how to use ALT text may also help you to be inclusive with your social media content.

We would like to remind social media and content managers at diabetes organisations and charities that being inclusive of people living with disabilities includes those with visual impairments and their ability to access your content on the Internet. We encourage you to make changes to any inaccessible content at your soonest convenience and to maintain good accessibility practice.

Thank you for reading about our pledge. We do hope that you will follow us in making social media a kinder and more accessible place for everybody.
